What Makes the Baron Caster Perfect for Small Furniture?
The Shepherd Baron caster comes in two sizes, a 1 5/8” ball made of soft rubber and a 2” ball made of Polyolefin. Applications for this caster include not only furniture, but also fixtures, medical equipment and office equipment.
If you are trying to match the casters on various applications throughout your home or office, you can! Finish options include bright chrome, metalized brass and Windsor antique so you can match the style of almost any furniture.
The caster is designed with double ball bearing raceways for smooth movement, easy rolling and long life. The swivel design provides excellent maneuverability, which makes these casters ideal for moving furniture around in places that are hard to reach and require precise placement.
The threaded stem models come with an octagon washer for easy installation, and the 2” model is heat treated for greater resistance to wear in higher load situations. The dynamic load capacity per caster is 70 pounds for the 1 5/8” wheel diameter and 80 pounds for the 2” wheel diameter.
The Shepherd Baron caster includes designs for four different attachment methods depending on your application. You may have furniture with legs, or furniture with a flat bottom. You may want a caster that is easy to remove when desired, or one that is more firmly attached. Whatever application you need, there is an attachment method that will work best for you. Below is a look at these four models and what they are best used for.
Baron Threaded Stem Models
If your installation involves threading the caster into a threaded socket, this is the model for you. It gives you the ability to lock the threads in place by applying torque using the octagon washer or even a thread-locking compound.
This is ideal for furniture that includes legs and therefore has limited surface area to attach the caster. Threads come in two different sizes, with two different lengths each. The 5/16” thick threaded rod is a UNC18 thread pitch which is available in ¾” and 1” lengths. The 3/8” thick threaded rod is a UNC16 thread pitch and is available in a 1” and 1 ½” length.
Baron Grip Ring Stem models
Also excellent for furniture with legs, the grip ring stem is a 3/8” diameter stem that is 1” long. Near the top of the stem is a separate metal ring crimped into place in a cutout around the stem. This ring feature will clip into the socket, which will then hold with greater force. This style of attachment is easier to remove than the grip neck stem mentioned below.
Baron Grip Neck Stem Models
The grip neck stem model is also useful for furniture with legs that have limited area for attaching casters. The stem on this model of caster is 5/16” diameter and 1 ½” long. Near the end of the stem is a cut out ring, which will quickly snap into a feature on the socket and lock the caster stem in place. Once in place the socket holds the caster firmly and is difficult to remove.
Baron Swivel Top Plate Models
For furniture with a flat bottom where you can screw on a flat plate, the top plate model is ideal. The plate is 2” by 1 3/16” with four 3/16” holes for attachment. The top plate is a solid metal for exceptional strength when attached to your furniture.
Socket Options Available for Baron Casters
There are many socket solutions that are available for the various Baron casters. These include casters specifically to connect to wood, round tubes, PVC pipe legs and square tubes as well as weldable caster mounts to attach in place and corner brackets for furniture with interior corners to affix to. Whatever your need there is a socket available to match.
