Drums can be difficult to hold and difficult to move because of their cylindrical nature. They have very few places to grip and are often exceptionally heavy. All of this can lead to many problems when dealing with these items, not the least of which is the safety of the employee who needs to muscle the drum into the right place.
Not only are drums difficult to handle, they also typically must be transported in many different ways: lifting off of a pallet or skid, transporting throughout your warehouse or manufacturing facility as well as placing the drum into working position and returning the empty drum to the pallet or skid for removal. These are very different tasks with different requirements and finding one piece of material handling equipment that can do it all is hard to do, but Wesco has the equipment you need.
If you are looking for a drum handler, or any other piece of material handling equipment, turn to Douglas Equipment for the expert knowledge and advice you need. We can help you to find the right equipment for the requirements that you have based on your specific job. Here is a bit about the ergonomic drum handler that we offer from Wesco International Products:
Wesco’s Ergonomic Drum Handler – Model DM-1100
The Model DM-1100 Ergonomic Drum Handler from Wesco will grip a barrel, lift it to 20” above the floor, transport the drum on easily maneuverable casters, and place the drum down where it is needed. There is no need for the operator to touch the drum to raise it, transport it or lower it as the drum handler takes care of this for you. This ergonomic solution is ideal for lifting, transporting and placing drums onto spill pallets, standard pallets and skids.
The drum handler will handle most drums of 30-gallons, 55-gallons or 85-gallons with a maximum capacity of 1100 pounds. The drums can be made of steel, fiber or poly and they will still be able to be lifted by the ergonomic drum handler. This drum handler is equipped with the U.S. Patented Gator Grip (U.S. Patent No 6,619,905), which is an exclusive auto grip lock that will not drop the drum if operated properly. The spring-loaded jaws will hold any 3/16” or higher drum rim, and works with most drums with locking rings.
The model DM-1100 is an all steel frame design with a Wesco made hydraulic pump to raise and lower the drum. The hydraulics work on a foot pump located at the back of the drum handler, and when fully raised the top of the drum sits at 54” from the ground for a standard 55-gallon steel drum. The rise stroke on the hydraulic handle is 1” for ease of use.
The front legs can be either retracted or extended. This can allow you to extend the front legs when space permits to gain the best load capacity, or retract the legs when necessary. Keep in mind that when the legs are retracted you will suffer a slight reduction in the load that can be lifted. When retracted, the casters sit 33” from the rear wheels and 36” apart and have a load lift capacity of 650 pounds. Extended they sit 36” from the rear wheels and 41” apart with the maximum load capacity of 1100 pounds.
For easy maneuverability, the drum handler is fitted with two rear wheels and two front casters on the end of the leg extensions. The wheels are 5” phenolic for smooth rolling and to prevent damage to floors. The front casters are 2” phenolic swivel casters, which provide easy movement and steering while also protecting the floor from damage. The handle for operating the ergonomic drum handler sits 41” from the floor for easy access and handling. For safety a floor lock is in place that holds the rear wheel from rolling on the floor when engaged with a foot activated lever. This allows the operator to hold the drum handler in place when it is not intended to move.
The dimensions for the ergonomic drum handler from Wesco are as follows: width 41”, height 61”, depth 40” and weight 355.5 pounds. The cubic foot capacity is 57.89, with the load lift capacities as above at 1100 pounds maximum. This is a small but mighty piece of machinery that can help you with a vast majority of your drum handling needs. Apart from tilting or mixing the drums, this machine really can do it all.
