How to Select Industrial Casters for Your Warehouse Floor
A practical 6-variable framework — load, tread, mounting, swivel, brake, environment — to specify the right industrial caster on the first try.
Selecting an industrial caster is not a single decision — it is six interlinked decisions that together determine whether the caster will perform, fail prematurely, or damage your floor. This guide walks through each variable in the order our team uses to spec applications at Douglas Equipment.
1. Load Capacity
Calculate the per-caster minimum capacity:
Per-caster minimum = (total load including equipment weight) ÷ (number of casters) × 1.25 safety factor
The 1.25 multiplier is the recommended safety factor under ANSI MH28.3. It accounts for impact loads, uneven floors, and operating wear.
Example: A cart weighing 800 lbs loaded, with 4 casters → 200 lbs per caster minimum × 1.25 = 250 lbs minimum rating.
Always round up to the next available capacity class.
2. Wheel Tread Material
The most application-specific variable. Choose by floor type, environment, and load class:

3. Mounting Type
- Plate (top plate) — most common for industrial. Bolts to equipment frame.
- Threaded stem — screws into tapped hole. Light-medium duty.
- Grip ring stem — friction fit. Light institutional.
- Square stem / expanding adapter — for tube frames.
4. Swivel vs. Rigid
Standard configuration: 2 swivel + 2 rigid at opposite corners — directional stability with maneuverability. All-swivel for tight spaces (medical carts, food service). All-rigid for straight-line conveyor applications.
5. Brake Type
- Side-lock — wheel only, no swivel lock. Temporary positioning.
- Top-lock — pressure on tread from above. Common medium-duty.
- Total-lock — locks wheel + swivel. Often specified for medical carts and stationary food processing equipment.
6. Environmental Factors
- Temperature range (specify if outside 0°F–200°F)
- Moisture, washdown, chemical exposure
- ESD / anti-static (electronics, explosive atmospheres)
- Food-contact requirements (confirm with your own regulatory team)
