South Florida Warehouses Are Not Average American Warehouses

The combination of tropical heat and humidity, international cargo flows through the Port of Miami and MIA airport, a multilingual workforce, and the demands of industries from food import to aerospace creates a material handling environment that generic national catalogs don't fully address.

Per OSHA 1910.176 (handling and storage of materials), facilities must maintain safe, unobstructed aisles and use material handling equipment appropriate to the loads being handled. Per ASME B56.1 (safety standards for low-lift and high-lift trucks), powered pallet equipment must meet specific design and maintenance standards.

Pallet Jacks & Pallet Trucks

Not all pallet jacks are equal — especially in a South Florida environment where equipment is used at higher ambient temperatures and often by workers who rotate between tasks.

• Manual hydraulic, 5,500–8,000 lb capacity — the workhorse for receiving docks. Wesco in stock (Vestil pallet trucks to order).
• Narrow (21" wide) — commonly used with European pallets.
• Electric walkie pallet truck — eliminates fatigue in high-frequency operations. ROI typically achieved in 12–18 months.
• Stainless steel — for food, pharma, and washdown environments. NSF-compliant models available.

Hand Trucks, Platform & Vending Trucks

The most abused piece of equipment in any warehouse. The difference between a $75 hand truck and a $200 Wesco industrial-grade unit becomes apparent within 90 days in a Miami high-cycle environment.

• 2-wheel industrial, 500–1,000 lbs — Wesco aluminum (corrosion-resistant), Harper steel (high-abuse durability)
• Convertible (2/4-wheel) — standard on over-the-road delivery trucks for deliverymen.
• Flat platform truck, 1,000–4,000 lbs — oak-deck from Mid-States Manufacturing, aluminum-deck from Wesco.
• Stair-climbing — for older Miami buildings without freight elevators

Dock Equipment

Every receiving dock in South Florida needs to be properly equipped for safe, efficient operations. OSHA 1910.178 requires wheel chocks for any vehicle at a dock; OSHA 1910.176 requires safe material flow at docks.

• Dock boards (forklift): 10,000 lb is the most common size (aluminum), up to 20,000 lb in steel — size to roughly 2× your forklift's weight. Aluminum for FL humidity.
• Dock plates (hand truck / pallet jack): 1,600–6,600 lb capacity (Bluff line), no curbs.
• Wheel chocks: aluminum and rubber.
• Portable yard ramps: for facilities without raised docks (common in older Miami industrial buildings).
• Dock safety lights / signals.

Drum Handling

Miami's food, chemical, pharmaceutical, and industrial supply chain generates enormous volume of 55-gallon drum handling. Improper drum handling is a leading cause of ergonomic injuries and chemical spills in South Florida warehouses.

• Drum truck: Wesco 20BT or Harper 7889 — steel, self-standing, 800 lb, with adjustable chime hook for steel drums (Wesco 40BT uses a strap for 55-gal poly drums).
• Drum lifter: Morse — the dedicated drum-handling specialist — plus Vestil hydraulic models. We stock Wesco's 55-gallon drum dolly frame.
• Drum dumper: Vestil 55/30 gal, controlled tipping.
• Drum dolly / spill containment: EPA 40 CFR 264.175 compliant.

Scissor Lift Tables & Ergonomic Equipment

OSHA's General Duty Clause (Section 5(a)(1)) requires employers to provide a workplace free from recognized hazards, including ergonomic injury risks from manual material handling. In South Florida warehouses, where heat increases physical fatigue risk, ergonomic equipment investment has a clear ROI through reduced workers' compensation claims.
