Why Miami Food Processors Specify Casters Carefully

Miami-Dade has 327+ food and beverage manufacturers and an even larger import-distribution footprint via the Port of Miami and MIA cargo. From beverage co-packers in Medley to seafood importers in Doral to commercial bakeries across Hialeah — every operation runs mobile equipment that must survive daily washdown, stay cleanable, and roll on wet floors without slipping or marring.

We have specified food-processing casters for South Florida since 1955. We know the difference between a caster that looks food-grade and one actually built for washdown and cleanability.

Manufacturer Documentation for Your QA Team

We request manufacturer documentation for the food-service caster lines we distribute — material data, published statements, and dimensional drawings, as available from the brand. Tell us what your QA team requires when you call. Certifications are issued by the manufacturer, not by Douglas.

Food Processing Caster FAQ

What is a washdown-duty caster?
A washdown-duty caster is designed to survive direct high-pressure water spray with the detergents and sanitizers used in food-plant wash protocols. Construction: sealed bearings, stainless steel housings (304 or 316 grade), thermoplastic or stainless wheels, and no exposed crevices that trap residue or harbor pathogens.
Do you stock 316 stainless steel casters?
Yes. 316 stainless is the standard for food contact zones, beachfront and salt-air environments, and applications with aggressive sanitizers (chlorine, peracetic acid). We stock 316 in capacity ranges from 80 lbs (light cart) to 2,500 lbs (heavy production equipment).
Do you supply documentation for inspected food plants?
We help you select casters with smooth, crevice-free surfaces and stainless or food-grade materials, and we request the manufacturer's documentation for the specific SKU. Certifications are issued by the manufacturer, not by Douglas — your QA team should verify them against your own inspection requirements. Contact our team for official manufacturer documentation and specifications.
How do you handle thermal extremes in food processing?
Cold storage (-40°F to 32°F): we spec rubber or thermoplastic rubber that stays flexible at low temp. Hot processing (steam, ovens): high-temperature glass-filled nylon or phenolic rated to 525°F. Tell us the temperature range and we will spec accordingly.
Do Miami food importers use special casters for shipping containers?
Yes. Container-receiving stations at the Port of Miami often use heavy-duty corrosion-resistant casters on portable inspection stations and cold-chain transfer carts. Salt air exposure means 316 stainless or thoroughly sealed components. We have specified for Port-adjacent food import operations for decades.
